Listening to: Phish - Billy Breathes [1996] - Waste.mp3Wow. I've had the idea of doing this for a while, but…hey, here we are, domain setup and everything! How cool is that?
Keep your eyes on this blog, if you're interested at all about the (infamous) Heatwave that occurred in Aardvark Heights from July 13th through July 30th, 1994. We'll start with a couple posts I've prepared on the 10 year anniversary of the Heatwave; one to set the stage, and the other to share part of my own story.
The idea here is to provide a place for those who have been affected by the Heatwave to share their story to a COMPLETELY UNCENSORED public record. Don't believe what you read in the history books and scholarly journals and bullshit news articles; they aren't the true accounting of what it was like for us who lived it. This is our space, and always will be.
My goal here isn't to call out bad science or unethical shit or whatever, even though there's plenty of that to go around and I'm sure folks will have some stuff to say. What I really want here is a place for our voices to be heard, because despite all the interest and bullshit that we had to deal with, nobody ever bothered to ask us Heatwave kids what it's like to live with the Heatwave every day or share our story or put any of that on the written record. People are so gun-shy about the idea of kids being sexual beings too but the Heatwave put a hell of a magnifying glass on the fact that sexuality - even for young'uns - is just as natural as a rainy day.
So here's how it works:
Nothing is off the table here. I've invited everyone I know to contribute, but if you know anyone who could share their story here, the info's at the bottom of the page below the About the Author section. I intend to welcome all formats, and you have my guarantee that there will be absolutely no censorship or editing to your submissions.
Anonymity will be honored without question. Received e-mails from authors which wish to remain anonymous will be deleted immediately after their contribution is published. Note that due to this, anonymous submissions cannot be retracted.
About the Author:
My name is Reggie Montgomery. I'm a red squirrel, and I'm 20 years old. I have three incredible wives, and four beautiful daughters that amaze me in new ways every day. I grew up in a town called Aardvark Heights, Missouri, and yes, I'm a Heatwave kid. I'm creating this blog in the hopes to give a voice to the people like me that had the same sort of weird and unforgettable childhoods that I did. This blog is going to be used as a place for us to share our experiences, what we loved, what we hated…and more importantly, to give a voice and space to the people that lived through one of the biggest mysteries of the modern age.
If the Heatwave has left a permanent mark on your life, please feel free to share your story to webmaster@btf-writing.com. We accept both credited and anonymous submissions!
